Although Nova Vida has bunks that can sleep five, she is more comfortable to cruise with a crew of three.
Owner and Captain was me, David Kidd, pictured at left. I'm a former production engineer and computer programmer now retired. Cruising is the latest in the list of my leisure pursuits that has included flying model aeroplanes, soaring, gokart racing, sailing small dinghies and trailer sailers. Some of my early boats and lads who have crewed them for me are pictured at right. Nova Vida was my first keelboat and sailing her provided challenges and experiences that I had never encountered at any time earlier in my life.

Occasional First Mate aboard Nova Vida was Ray Stockdale, pictured with one of his friends at left. Ray had a long career as a radio technician, an interest he pursues today as a hobby. Unfortunately, Ray's health no longer permits him to make long sailing trips. He is no stranger to blue water sailing either, having cruised from Australia to England aboard the tall ship Eolus. Whilst in Europe Ray sailed the Swedish and Norwegian coasts in a North Norwegian fishing vessel called a fembøring, an open boat named Munin with only 6 inches of freeboard amidships, and one square sail. Before that he had raced catamarans on Melbourne's Port Philip Bay.

Crewman to have sailed furthest so far with me in Nova Vida is Chris Foley, who at the age of 17 joined the boat to gain his first experience of sailing. He sailed the cruise from Maryborough to Sydney and return, described in more detail here.

Waiting for a permanent crew to emerge for Nova Vida we considered applications from anyone interested in joining us for a while. People able to commit to the length of time involved in cruising overseas are generally older than those pictured at right, but we considered anyone aged from about mid-teenage years onward. Thank you to all those who contacted David Kidd via his contact page expressing an interest in joining our crew for a while.
