Some idea of the beauty of Fraser Island can be gained from these pictures taken on flights with Elite Airways. 1. 75 mile beach forms the main highway for four wheel drive vehicles exploring the island, and is a favourite spot amongst ocean fishermen. Inland from the beach, some big sand blows can be seen in this picture. 2. The wrecked ship Maheno is easy to see from the air. The wreck was used as a practice target by bombers during the second world war, but does not seem to have suffered much damage from that source. 3. Sandblows form one of Fraser Island's main natural attractions and here, perched high in the dunes is one just north of the Maheno wreck. The Knifeblade sandblow in this vicinity is the biggest on the island. 4. This view of Lake Wabby shows the big sandblow that is gradually engulfing its waters. The sandblow advances about three metres a year on average and is expected to eventually obliterate the lake, currently the deepest on the Island. 5. Lakes large and small may be seen scattered all over Fraser Island, but none are prettier than Lake McKenzie, shown here. The dazzling white beach is formed
of sand leached by the rise and fall of lake waters until all impurities have been removed, leaving pure silica. 6. Kingfisher Bay Resort nestles into the native bushland on the sheltered western shore of the island. 7. On the western side of the island is the Great Sandy Strait, where shallow water only just covers the sand extending far from Fraser Island's shore. This is a view looking towards Kingfisher Bay and Resort. 8. Photos on this page were taken on scenic flights with Elite Airways, which offer a range of economical tours, charter, and photograpy flights from Hervey Bay airport. Pictured here is chief pilot, Roman Badov, with the four-seater Cessna. Phone Elite on (07) 4125 3111 for details of their offerings. |
