Hervey Bay is where most people hire their Four Wheel Drive 4X4 4WD vehicle with which to explore Fraser Island.

When hiring a 4 wheel drive it's a good idea to check that the company you are hiring from is a current member of the Fraser Coast 4X4 Hire Association.  The association established by four wheel drive hire operators believe visitors to Hervey Bay and Fraser Island are entitled to correct and up to date information about visiting Fraser Island, reliable four wheel drive vehicles, friendly service and ongoing support during their visit.

Visitors hiring four wheel drives from association members can be assured that they are dealing with a reputable company and its vehicles comply with current Department of Transport regulations.  The information that is supplied by members of the association is a result of ongoing consultation with the Department of Environment and departmental rangers based on Fraser Island.  Be assured of your satisfaction by hiring from Fraser Coast 4X4 Hire Association members.

The association logo is your guarantee of good service, correct advice, reliable vehicles, and a fair price.  Further information about the association and its current members can be obtained by writing to:

The Secretary,
Fraser Coast 4X4 Hire Association,
102 Boat Harbour Drive,
Pialba, Queensland 4655.

Fraser Island Permit Fees

If you are visiting Fraser Island in your own 4WD vehicle authorities require you to obtain a vehicle entry permit (and a camping permit if you are camping outside a recognised commercial campground/caravan park).  In March 2001 the fees were:
4WD entry permit $30
4WD camping permit $3.85 per person per night or $15.40 per family per night

Before enjoying the wonders of Fraser Island it's a good idea to obtain a copy of the Park Guide produced by the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service.  It outlines a number of points that will make your stay on the island safer and more enjoyable.  It contains valuable information on the lakes, scenic drives, walking tracks, swimming, flora and fauna.

You can obtain copies of the guide and permits from the Department offices at:

Corner of Lennox and Alice Streets, Maryborough,
Rainbow Beach Road, Rainbow Beach,
Bruce Highway, Gympie,
46 Quay Street, Bundaberg,
and at 160 Anne Street, Brisbane.

You may also obtain the guide and permits 7 days a week from the Marina Kiosk, Buccaneer Drive Urangan, Hervey Bay, and at the Information Hut at River Heads barge departure point.
